Struggling teams face off when Kansas City host Oakland

Sep 2, 2008 - 1:41 PM Oakland (63-74) at Kansas City (57-79) 8:10 pm. EDT

KANSAS CITY, Missouri (Ticker) -- The Oakland Athletics visit the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday in a matchup of teams that have no shot of playing in October.

Oakland has struggled mightily due to an anemic offense that ranks last in the American League in runs (531). The A's have gone 37 straight games without scoring more than six runs - the longest stretch by an AL team since 1988.

Needless to say, they have no chance of catching the American League West-leading Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Oakland, which will miss the playoffs for the second straight season, sends rookie Gio Gonzalez to the hill.

Gonzalez (1-2, 7.25 ERA) is making his sixth career start. The 22-year-old lefthander allowed four runs and three hits in three innings of a 6-5 win over Anaheim on Wednesday. Gonzalez was acquired in the deal that sent outfielder and fan favorite Nick Swisher to the Chicago White Sox.

He will try and help the A's rebound from a 12-4 loss to Minnesota on Sunday.

Unlike Oakland, Kansas City is getting used to being at home in October. The Royals are on their way to their fifth straight last place finish in the AL Central. Kansas City went just 7-20 in August.

The Royals hope Zack Greinke (9-9, 3.72) can help them start September on the right foot. Kansas City's most consistent starter is winless in his last four starts despite a 2.38 ERA in that span.
