Phillies hope to gain ground in NL East vs. red-hot Nationals

Sep 2, 2008 - 1:56 PM Philadelphia (75-63) at Washington (53-85), 7:10 pm EDT

WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- Looking to gain ground in the National League East, the Philadelphia Phillies have to defeat the major league's hottest team.

The Phillies face the suddenly surging Washington Nationals on Tuesday.

Philadelphia trials the New York Mets (77-61) by two games in the NL East race.

Ryan Zimmerman hit a two-run homer to lead the Nationals to their season-best seventh consecutive victory with a 7-4 win over the Philadelphia Phillies on Monday afternoon.

Washington's seven-game winning streak is the franchise's second-longest since it returned to Washington in 2005. That season, the Nationals won 10 in a row from June 2-12.

John Lannan (8-12, 3.92 ERA) will attempt to keep the Nationals' rolling. The lefthander will try to record his third win in as many starts.

He will be opposed by ace Cole Hamels (11-8, 3.13), who is hoping to win his third straight decision. The lefthander has given up four runs over 22 innings in his last three games.
