Diamondbacks SS Drew seeks more success vs. Cardinals

Sep 2, 2008 - 1:59 PM St. Louis (74-64) at Arizona (70-67) 9:40 pm. EDT

PHOENIX (Ticker) -- Stephen Drew looks to build off the best game of his young career on Tuesday when the Arizona Diamondbacks continue a series with the St. Louis Cardinals.

The 25-year-old Drew went 5-for-5 and became the third player in franchise history to hit for the cycle in an 8-6 victory on Monday.

The 15th overall pick of the 2004 draft, Drew also made a different kind of history. He entered the record book along with Adrian Beltre when the Seattle third baseman hit for the cycle later in the night. It was the first time since 1920 that there had been two cycles on the same day.

He was more satisfied that Arizona won and managed to maintain a 2 1/2-game lead over Los Angeles in the National League West.

"I was kind of in awe," Drew said. "Today we were behind, but everybody pulled together and everybody contributed. To hit for the cycle, it is fine, but it wouldn't have meant anything if we didn't win."

Drew has become somewhat of a Cardinal-killer, hitting .359 (14-for-39) with two homers and five RBI in his last 10 games against the St. Louis.

He will try and help them to a eighth straight home win over the Cardinals.

It won't be easy though, as St. Louis sends ace Adam Wainwright (7-3, 3.04 ERA) to the mound. Wainwright missed nearly three months with a sprained middle finger, but has gone 1-0 with a 2.25 ERA in two starts since returning from the disabled list.

Arizona counters with Yusmeiro Petitt (3-3, 2.83), who is seeking a third straight win. The righthander is 3-2 with a 2.70 ERA in his last six starts.
