Mets building momentum ahead of NL East showdown
Sep 3, 2008 - 11:50 AM New York (78-61) at Milwaukee (80-58) 2:05 p.m. EDTMILWAUKEE (Ticker) -- The New York Mets have a chance to build some major momentum before entering a very important series.
The Mets try to sweep a road series from the Milwaukee Brewers for the first time in four years on Wednesday.
Endy Chavez delivered a go-ahead sacrifice fly in the 10th inning, lifting New York to a second straight victory over the Brewers with a 6-5 win Tuesday. The triumph helped the Mets maintain their two-game lead over the Philadelphia Phillies (76-63) in the National League East Division ahead of the teams' meeting this weekend.
Before New York hosts the Phillies, though, it will try to sweep the Brewers on the road for the first time since 2004.
Mets' starter Oliver Perez (9-7, 3.90 ERA) has logged three straight no decisions, surrendering nine runs in 18 2/3 innings over that span. However, the Mets managed only seven runs of support for the 27-year-old lefthander while winning two of those outings.
Dave Bush (9-9, 4.12) counters for the Brewers looking to continue his recent run of success. Milwaukee has won eight of Bush's last nine starts as the righthander has registered a 5-1 record and 2.74 ERA during that stretch.
