Pirates hope September yields better results
Sep 3, 2008 - 12:40 PM Pittsburgh (58-79) at Cincinnati (61-77) 7:10 pm. EDTCINCINNATI (Ticker) -- The Pittsburgh Pirates are glad August is in their rearview mirror. After snapping a lengthy skid, the Pirates seek a second straight win against the Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday.
Ian Snell threw six solid innings and Andy LaRoche and rookie Brandon Moss each homered as the Pirates snapped a 10-game skid with a 3-2 victory on Monday. It was the longest losing streak in more than two years for Pittsburgh, which went 7-21 in August.
"It's a new month," LaRoche said. "Hopefully we can keep rolling now. We played a bunch of tough teams before this series. Now we'll try to take it as a new month and try to put something together."
That may be hard to do against All-Star righthander Edinson Volquez (16-5, 3.04 ERA), who is 1-0 with a 2.12 ERA in three starts against Pittsburgh. Volquez is unbeaten in his last four starts, but is coming off a shaky outing against San Francisco on Friday in which he allowed six runs and eight hits in 5 1/3 innings of an 11-7 win.
The Reds, who fell to 3-1 on their nine-game homestand, will try and rough up Ross Ohlendorf (1-1, 6.53 ERA), who is making his first career start. The righthander was acquired from the New York Yankees on July 26 as part of the deal that sent outfielder Xavier Nady and lefthander Damaso Marte.
Ohlendorf will face red-hot rookie Chris Dickerson, who is hitting .329 with five homers and 11 RBI in 18 games since being recalled from Class AAA Louisville.
