Nationals trying to climb out of NL East cellar

Sep 4, 2008 - 10:13 AM Washington (54-86) at Atlanta (60-80) 7:00 p.m. EDT

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- The Washington Nationals have spent the majority of the season in last place in the National League East, but that could change soon.

The Nationals go for their ninth win in 10 games when they meet the struggling Atlanta Braves on Thursday.

Washington is six games behind the Braves for fourth place, but Atlanta has lost 18 of its previous 23 - including a 5-3 setback to the Florida Marlins on Wednesday.

The Nationals, who are coming off a 9-7 triumph over the Philadelphia Phillies on Wednesday, swept the Braves last weekend.

Jason Bergmann (2-10, 4.83 ERA) did not help that cause Saturday when he surrendered six runs on eight hits and three walks over 4 1/3 innings during Washington's 9-8 victory.

The 26-year-old Bergmann hopes September goes better than the last three months did for him. The righthander went 1-8 during that stretch.

Like Saturday, Bergmann will be opposed by lefthander Jo-Jo Reyes (3-10, 5.49), who has lost six straight decisions and is winless since June 13.
