Slowey helping Twins keep pace atop AL Central
Sep 4, 2008 - 10:11 AM Minnesota (77-62) at Toronto (72-66) 7:07 p.m. EDTTORONTO (Ticker) -- Kevin Slowey has done his part to keep the Minnesota Twins in the thick of the playoff race.
Slowey goes for his fifth straight win on Thursday when the Twins wrap up their series against the Toronto Blue Jays.
The 24-year-old righthander, Slowey (11-8, 3.70 ERA) has allowed two runs or less in each of his last five starts, leading Minnesota to victory in four of those outings.
The performance of the second-year starter has helped the Twins keep pace with the the Chicago White Sox (78-61), who own a one game lead in the American League Central.
Minnesota entered Wednesday's contest against the Blue Jays tied with the White Sox for the division lead, but committed three errors en route to a 5-4, 11-inning loss. Chicago defeated the Cleveland Indians, 4-2, earlier in the day.
Jesse Litsch (9-8, 4.01) tries to lead Toronto to its fifth straight win. Litsch has lost four of his last five decisions, including his last start when he allowed three runs and 10 hits in 6 2/3 innings. He struck out two and did not surrender a walk, suffering a hard-luck 3-2 setback to the Tampa Bay Rays last Thursday.
