Marlins seek rare three-game winning streak
Sep 6, 2008 - 10:21 AM Florida (72-69) at St. Louis (75-66) 7:15 p.m. EDTST. LOUIS (Ticker) -- If the Florida Marlins want to make a playoff push, they are going to have to string together some wins.
The Marlins aim for their third straight victory on Saturday when they play the St. Louis Cardinals, who are also desperate to gain ground in the playoff race.
Florida, which pulled out a 4-1 victory in 11 innings over the Cardinals on Friday, sits in third place in the National League East and is seven games behind the division-leading New York Mets (79-62).
Losers in six of its last seven, St. Louis remains 10 games back of the Chicago Cubs (85-56) in the National League Central and six games behind the Milwaukee Brewers (81-60) in the wild-card race.
The Cardinals hope righthander Todd Wellemeyer (11-6, 3.76 ERA) can reverse their fortunes.
Wellemeyer is trying to avoid his third straight loss, hoping to get more run support than his last two starts. St. Louis did not score in either of Wellemeyer's previous two starts.
The Marlins will counter with Scott Olsen (6-9, 4.35), who is hoping to avoid fifth straight loss. Florida has not won in Olsen's last eight starts.
