Byrd, Red Sox trying to close AL East deficit
Sep 7, 2008 - 12:48 PM Boston (83-58) at Texas (70-73), 3:05 pm EDTARLINGTON, Texas (Ticker) -- Paul Byrd aims to win his fourth consecutive start on Sunday when the Boston Red Sox meet the Texas Rangers.
The Red Sox trail the Tampa Bay Rays (85-55) by 2 1/2 games in the American League East race.
Boston failed to cut into the deficit on Saturday as the Rangers were led by recent minor league call-up Nelson Cruz, who had two home runs and five RBI in a 15-8 victory.
The Red Sox had won four straight and six of seven by a combined margin of 52-17, then surrendered almost that many runs in one game.
Byrd (10-11, 4.58 ERA) has received new life since joining Boston on August 12, posting a 3-1 record with a 4.79 ERA and 13 strikeouts over four starts.
The Rangers will counter with righthander Brandon McCarthy (1-0, 2.25), who is making his fourth start. He missed most of the season with right forearm inflammation.
