Dodgers send Maddux to the mound in opener against Padres
Sep 8, 2008 - 1:56 PM LA Dodgers (73-70) at San Diego (55-88), 10:05 pm EDTSAN DIEGO (Ticker) -- It didn't take long for Manny Ramirez's presence to be felt. Suddenly, the Los Angeles Dodgers are the most feared team in the National League, and can reap the benefits of another mid-season acquisition in the midst of the playoff chase.
Greg Maddux takes the mound against his former team for the second straight start as the surging Dodgers take on the San Diego Padres in the opener of a three-game set on Monday.
Maddux (7-11, 4.18 ERA) was dealt by the Padres on August 20 and he immediately gave the Dodgers an instant boost in their already potent starting rotation. However, he has struggled a bit since returning to Los Angeles, going 1-2 with a 5.94 ERA in three pedestrian starts.
On Tuesday, he held the Padres to two runs and six hits in 5 2/3 innings en route to a 5-2 triumph - the 354th of his decorated career.
The Dodgers have won eight in a row and swept the Padres last week in a three-game set before taking three crucial matches from the Arizona Diamondbacks (71-71) over the weekend.
Ramirez is batting .400 (48-for-119) with 11 homers and 34 RBI since being acquired by the Boston Red Sox prior to the non-waiver trade deadline on July 31. Before he was a member of the rejuvenated squad, Los Angeles was three games behind the Diamondbacks for first place in the NL West. Now, they have built a 1 1/2-game bulge with 19 to play.
Los Angeles, which doesn't face a team over .500 for the rest of the season, hopes to solve struggling righthander Cha Seung Baek (4-10, 5.36).
Baek has dropped four straight decisions and was roughed up for seven runs and eight hits in 3 2/3 innings on Tuesday against the Dodgers.
