Angels begin three-game home set against lifeless Yankees
Sep 8, 2008 - 2:02 PM NY Yankees (76-67) at LA Angels (86-56), 10:05 pm EDTANAHEIM, California (Ticker) -- While the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim continue to fend off the Tampa Bay Rays for the best record in the American League, the reeling New York Yankees will try to get out of fourth place in their own division.
Two teams headed in opposite directions, the Angels and Yankees begin a three-game set on Monday at Angel Stadium.
The Yankees, who have made the playoffs for 13 consecutive years, trail the Boston Red Sox (84-58) by 8 1/2 games in the AL wild-card race with 19 games remaining and seem destined to be left out once October filters out the game's most talented teams.
The Yankees, again owners of baseball's highest payroll on Opening Day this season, trail the Toronto Blue Jays (76-66) by a half-game for third place and haven't been that low in the division after an All-Star break since 1995.
Meanwhile, the Angels continue to roll with ease into the postseason, sitting on a comfortable 17-game lead in the AL West. They stand a half-game ahead of the Rays (85-56) for the top record in the AL, which will translate into a home-field advantage throughout the playoffs.
Jon Garland (12-8, 4.64 ERA), who has been one of the stalwart cogs in arguably the league's deepest rotation, takes the mound looking to bounce back from a pedestrian effort against the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday in which he yielded five runs and seven hits in six innings.
The 28-year-old righthander has allowed five runs in each of his last three outings and is 1-0 with a 4.50 ERA against New York this season.
The Yankees counter with Carl Pavano (2-0, 4.20), who suffered his first rough outing of the season last time out against the Rays. The righthander surrendered three runs and six hits in four innings before New York rallied for an 8-4 victory.
The beleaguered Pavano has made three starts this season and just 22 since inking a lucrative four-year deal in 2005.
Derek Jeter singled for his 2,518th career hit to tie Babe Ruth for second on the Yankees' all-time hit list during Sunday's finale against the Seattle Mariners - a series in which New York lost twice.
