Reeling Brewers open series vs. Reds
Sep 8, 2008 - 2:15 PM Cincinnati (64-79) at Milwaukee (82-61) 8:05 p.m. EDTMILWAUKEE (Ticker) -- The struggling offense of the Milwaukee Brewers will not see much of a break when they open a three-game set against the Cincinnati Reds on Monday.
Milwaukee, which has scored just 16 runs while dropping five-of-seven on their current 10-game homestand, will face off against Cincinnati ace Edinson Volquez (16-5, 3.12).
While the Chicago Cubs (86-57) have dropped seven-of-eight, the Brewers (82-61) have been unable to take advantage, as they still sit four games behind their division rival in the standings.
Volquez has won his last three starts, with his last loss coming at the hands of the Brewers. The righthander allowed five runs and nine hits over five innings of work in the Reds 8-1 loss on August 5.
The 25-year-old struck out a career-high 13 in his last outing, a seven-inning no-decision against the Pittsburgh Pirates on September 3.
After a 6-3 homestand, the Reds head to Milwaukee to start a six-game roadtrip.
The Brewers counter with righthander Dave Bush (9-10, 4.33), who had a personal four-game winning streak snapped in his last start. The 28-year-old allowed six runs, seven hits and three walks in five innings as the Brewers lost, 9-2, to the Mets on September 3.
Bush outdueled Volquez on August 5, allowing one run, three hits and two walks in seven innings of work.
Milwaukee was nearly the victim of a perfect game on Sunday, courtesy of San Diego Padres starter Chris Young. Gabe Kapler hit a home run with two outs in the eighth inning to get the Brewers on the board in a 10-1 defeat.
