Struggling Diamondbacks face Lincecum, Giants
Sep 8, 2008 - 2:31 PM Arizona (71-71) at San Francisco (61-80), 10:15 p.m. EDTSAN FRANCISCO (Ticker) -- The Arizona Diamondbacks hope to bounce back from a terrible weekend when they visit the San Francisco Giants in the first game of a three-game set on Monday.
Arizona, which has lost 11 of its last 15, was swept in a three-game series at the Los Angeles Dodgers over the weekend and now trail Los Angeles by 1 1/2 games in the National League West Division.
Things don't get much easier for the Diamondbacks, who will face righthander Tim Lincecum - one of the top contenders in the NL Cy Young race.
Lincecum (15-3, 2.60 ERA) is coming off a rare sub-par outing where he gave up five runs over five innings against Colorado last Tuesday, but the 24-year-old still has not lost since July 20. Lincecum, who is one strikeout behind CC Sabathia of the Milwaukee Brewers for the major league lead, is 2-0 with a 2.25 ERA in four career starts against Arizona.
The Diamondbacks will counter with Yusmeiro Petit (3-4, 3.44), who will be making his eighth start this season.
The 23-year-old last just 4 2/3 innings in his last start, allowing five runs - including three home runs - in Arizona's 8-2 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals.
Arizona is 7-4 against San Francisco this season.
