Streaking Blue Jays face White Sox
Sep 9, 2008 - 12:09 PM Toronto (76-66) at Chi White Sox (80-62) (1ST GAME) 2:05 p.m. EDTCHICAGO (Ticker) -- The Toronto Blue Jays go for their ninth straight victory Tuesday when they take on the Chicago White Sox in the first game of a day-night doubleheader.
The opening game of the four-game set was rained out Monday, delaying Toronto from continuing its longest winning streak since April 14-22, 1999.
Each of Toronto's eight wins during the torrid stretch have come against winning teams, and the Blue Jays will try and dampen the chances for the White Sox, who lead the Minnesota Twins (78-65) by 2 1/2 games in the American League Central.
A.J. Burnett (16-10, 4.47 ERA) hopes to continue Toronto's hot play in the first game. The righthander, who is winless in his last three starts since a personal six-game winning streak, gave up three runs over 6 2/3 innings but did not factor in the decision during Toronto's 5-4, 11-inning victory over Minnesota on Wednesday.
Javier Vazquez (11-12, 4.34) will take the mound for Chicago. The righthander won his last start, allowing two runs over six innings against the Cleveland Indians on Wednesday.
The White Sox, who recently lost slugger Carlos Quentin - possibly for the season - to a wrist injury, took two out of three from the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim this past weekend.
The second game of the doubleheader is scheduled for 8:11 p.m.
