Twins taking advantage of slump by division leaders

Sep 10, 2008 - 10:13 AM Kansas City (61-82) at Minnesota (79-65) 8:10 p.m. EDT

MINNEAPOLIS (Ticker) -- The Minnesota Twins are taking advantage of a slump by the American League Central leaders to get back in the thick of the playoff race.

The Twins try to move into a tie for first place in the division on Wednesday when they duel the lowly Kansas City Royals.

Minnesota lost two games to the Detroit Tigers over the weekend, but bounced back with a 7-2 victory during the series opener on Tuesday. Coupled with a pair of losses during a doubleheader by the Chicago White Sox (80-64), the Twins moved within one game of first place in the AL Central.

A pregame meeting and pep talk by manager Ron Gardenhire preceded the victory.

"Guys were into it, we relaxed a little bit in the clubhouse and had a nice little talk," Gardenhire said. "It's about enjoying the heck out of this thing, not going home at night and beating yourself up all night and not enjoying baseball. That's what happens when you are losing close ballgames and you're eating yourself up every night.

"I told them, 'I am going to enjoy myself. I'm going to have some fun watching you guys play, and I hope you will join me and have some fun.' "

Kevin Slowey (11-9, 3.75 ERA), who is 2-0 with a 1.23 ERA in two starts against the Royals this season, tries to push the Twins into first.

Kyle Davies (6-6, 4.59) goes for his second win in as many starts when he counters for Kansas City.
