Piniella fed up with slide by Cubs
Sep 10, 2008 - 10:07 AM Chi Cubs (86-58) at St. Louis (78-66) 8:15 p.m. EDTST. LOUIS (Ticker) -- The Chicago Cubs are sliding and manager Lou Piniella has had enough.
The Cubs try to avoid their third straight loss on Wednesday when they face the St. Louis Cardinals.
Chicago has lost eight of its last nine, scoring 20 runs total in those setbacks. Six of the losses have come against teams from the National League Central, which the Cubs lead by 4 1/2 games over the Milwaukee Brewers (82-63).
While Chicago's division lead seems secure, Piniella is not sure.
"Teams that play ball like that invariably get caught, no matter how big the lead," Piniella told the Chicago Sun-Times following Tuesday's 4-3 loss to the Cardinals. "You've got to stay aggressive, you've got to do the things you've done all year.
"We're not executing, we're making mistakes and we're getting beat. I'm getting quite tired of watching it, to be honest with you. ... That's not how we've played all year to get to where we are now. And I know we're trying. But truthfully, trying isn't good enough!"
Piniella hopes his rant will inspire Ted Lilly (13-9, 4.43 ERA), who has lost each of his last two starts. Lilly was pounded for five runs and four hits, lasting a season-low two innings en route to a 10-2 loss to the Cincinnati Reds on Friday.
Braden Looper (12-11, 4.09) counters for the Cardinals, who have won three straight to move 3 1/2 games behind the Brewers in the wild-card race.
