Red Sox looking to bounce back vs. red-hot Blue Jays
Sep 12, 2008 - 10:13 AM Toronto (78-67) at Boston (85-60) 7:05 p.m. ETBOSTON (Ticker) -- Despite missing an opportunity to seize the top spot in the American League East, the Boston Red Sox are still within striking distance of first place.
The red-hot Toronto Blue Jays would like to bring the Red Sox down in the standings and make up some ground in the AL wild-card race when they meet on Friday.
The Red Sox lost two of three games against the Tampa Bay Rays earlier this week, including a heartbreaking 4-2, 14-inning loss during the series finale on Wednesday. The setbacks dropped Boston 2 1/2 games behind the first-place Rays (87-57) in the AL East.
The Red Sox are still in control of the wild card, owning a 5 1/2-game lead over the Minnesota Twins (80-66). But, the Blue Jays are lurking 6 1/2 games behind Boston after winning 11 of 12 and posting 20 victories in their last 27 contests.
Rookie David Purcey (3-5, 5.23 ERA) tries to continue Toronto's winning ways. Purcey, 26, was outstanding during his last start, pitching eight scoreless innings, allowing six hits and three walks while striking out seven en route to a 1-0 victory against Tampa Bay on Sunday.
Tim Wakefield (8-10, 4.11) hopes to snap a two-game personal losing streak when he counters for the Red Sox. The 42-year-old knuckleballer had his worst outing of 2008 in his last out, surrendering seven runs and four hits in a season-low 1 2/3 innings. Wakefield walked four and allowed nine straight batters to reach base during a 15-8 loss to the Texas Rangers on Saturday.
