Spacious Petco Park not stopping Gonzalez

Sep 12, 2008 - 10:11 AM San Francisco (65-81) at San Diego (57-90) 10:05 p.m. EDT

SAN DIEGO (Ticker) -- Playing in a pitcher-friendly ballpark isn't stopping Adrian Gonzalez from abusing the opposition.

Gonzalez and the Padres go for their fourth win in six games when they meet the San Francisco Giants on Friday.

The 26-year-old All-Star homered twice and drove in four runs during Thursday's 11-3 romp, setting career-highs with 31 home runs and 103 RBI.

Gonzalez's season is even more impressive given he plays his home games in spacious Petco Park. The Padres' stadium is the second-hardest place in the majors to hit a home run, according to ESPN's park factor - a statistic that determines what venues favor pitchers over hitters.

Jonathan Sanchez (8-10, 4.53 ERA) tries to silence Gonzalez when he takes the mound for the Giants. Sanchez is 0-6 with a 6.28 ERA over his last nine starts and hasn't earned a win since June 29.

Jake Peavy (9-10, 2.63 ERA) looks to log his first victory since August 14 when he counters for San Diego. The reigning National League Cy Young Award winner suffered a heartbreaking loss in his last outing, surrendering one run and five hits in seven innings. Peavy walked four while striking out five as San Diego dropped a 1-0 decision to the Milwaukee Brewers on Saturday.
