Lincecum laying claim to NL Cy Young Award
Sep 13, 2008 - 10:13 AM San Francisco (66-81) at San Diego (57-91)SAN DIEGO (Ticker) -- The San Francisco Giants have struggled to find wins ... except when Tim Lincecum is on the mound.
Lincecum looks to further his argument for the National League Cy Young Award on Saturday when the Giants visit the San Diego Padres.
The 24-year-old righthander has been dominant in his second season. Lincecum (16-3, 2.54 ERA) is tied for first in the majors with 225 strikeouts and ranks second in ERA. His .842 win percentage is tops in the NL and his 16 wins are good for second in the league.
San Francisco, which is fourth in the dismal NL West, has won 19 of 29 games started by Lincecum, including four of the last five.
Lincecum is coming off one of his best starts of 2008 on Monday. He allowed two runs - one earned - and seven hits in 8 1/3 innings, walking two while striking out nine en route to his fifth straight win - a 6-2 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Chris Young (5-5, 4.48) counters for the Padres after registering his first career complete game on Sunday. Young limited the Milwaukee Brewers to one run and two hits while striking out five, leading San Diego to a 10-1 triumph.
