Niese, Reyes clash as Mets host Braves in nightcap
Sep 13, 2008 - 1:05 PM Atlanta at NY Mets (2ND GAME)FLUSHING, New York (Ticker) - With rain falling all over the northeast on Friday, the New York Mets and the Atlanta Braves were forced to wait until Saturday to kick off their three-game series.
The Mets will send rookie Jon Niese (0-0, 15.00 ERA) to the mound in the second game of a doubleheader, which will be played immediately following the first contest.
The 21-year-old lefthander, who will be making his second career start, was knocked around in his debut on September 2, allowing five runs and seven hits in three innings against the Milwaukee Brewers.
A seventh-round pick in 2005, Niese posted an 11-8 record with a 3.13 ERA in 29 starts between Class AA Binghamton and Class AAA New Orleans before joining New York.
The Braves will counter with their own young lefthander, Jo-Jo Reyes (3-10, 5.26). The 23-year-old has not earned a win since June 13 at the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, going 0-6 with a 6.90 ERA over his last 10 games - nine starts.
Reyes pitched well in a no-decision against the Mets on August 19, allowing two runs and four hits in six innings.
