Bannister looks to snap skid vs. Indians

CLEVELAND (Ticker) -- A postseason run never materialized for the Cleveland Indians - now they're trying to win enough games to get them to the .500 mark and the specter of respectability. Brian Bannister, on the other hand, is trying to win once.

The righthander takes the hill looking to snap a 2 1/2-month long losing streak as the Royals visit the Indians on Sunday.

Bannister (7-15, 5.81 ERA), who showed great promise last season and during his first three starts of 2008, has hit the low-water mark of his young career. He hasn't earned a victory in his last 13 starts, going 0-9 in that span while undergoing one miserable outing after another. He has allowed five runs or more six times during this stretch, including an August 17 showing in which he allowed 10 runs in one inning.

The Indians will counter with Jeremy Sowers (3-8, 5.60), who held the Baltimore Orioles to one run and four hits over eight innings of a 6-1 win on Tuesday. Sowers has performed well in three career starts against the Royals, going 2-1 with a 2.50 ERA.

After falling to Cleveland ace Cliff Lee in the series opener on Friday, the Royals rebounded by winning both ends of a day-night doubleheader. Mark Teahen had three hits in the first game and homered twice in the second.
