Twins aim to sweep of Orioles, keep pace in division

Sep 14, 2008 - 7:27 AM Minnesota (82-66) at Baltimore (65-82), 1:35 p.m. EDT

BALTIMORE (Ticker) -- Mother Nature - and the hapless Baltimore Orioles - has helped the Minnesota Twins move into a first-place tie atop the American League Central.

Minnesota looks to complete a three-game sweep of Baltimore on Sunday.

The Twins won both games of a doubleheader with Baltimore on Saturday and moved into a tie atop the division with the Chicago White Sox (81-65), who had their first two games with the Detroit Tigers washed out. Chicago and Detroit are scheduled to play a doubleheader on Sunday.

Playing the Orioles has proved to be beneficial for the Twins, who handed Baltimore its 19th loss in the last 23 games with a 12-6 victory in the nightcap.

Nick Blackburn (10-8, 3.67 ERA) looks to continue Minnesota's momentum. The 26-year-old righthander was strong in his last outing, giving up two runs over seven innings in a win against Kansas City on Tuesday.

Baltimore will counter with Radhames Liz (5-5, 7.75), who has not made it past the sixth inning in each of his last eight starts. The righthander, who has walked 44 batters in 65 innings, lasted 4 2/3 against Cleveland on Tuesday, giving up four runs - three earned and eight hits to suffer his second straight loss.
