Webb takes mound with Cy Young Award, playoff hopes fading
Sep 17, 2008 - 10:11 AM San Francisco (68-83) at Arizona (74-76) 9:40 p.m. EDTPHOENIX (Ticker) -- Brandon Webb's chances of winning the Cy Young Award are fading, along with the Arizona Diamondbacks' playoff hopes.
Webb aims to rebuild both hopes on Wednesday when the Diamondbacks face the San Francisco Giants.
The 2006 National League Cy Young Award winner, Webb appeared to be a lock for the 2008 honor with a 19-4 record and 2.74 ERA on August 21. But, the 29-year-old righthander dropped each of his next three starts, while watching his ERA balloon to 3.41.
Webb got back on track in his last start, pitching eight shutout innings. He allowed five hits and two walks while striking out two, becoming the NL's first 20-game winner during a 3-2 victory over the Cincinnati Reds on Friday.
Webb will try to duplicate that performance and keep the Diamondbacks' postseason aspirations alive. Arizona enters the day 4 1/2-games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers (79-72) in the NL West.
Jonathan Sanchez (9-10, 4.47), who snapped a six-game personal losing streak during his last start, counters for the Giants. Sanchez surrendered two runs and six hits in six innings on Friday. The 25-year-old lefthander walked two and struck out six en route to a 5-2 victory over the San Diego Padres - his first win since June 29.
