Guillen, Royals seek longest winning streak in five years

Sep 18, 2008 - 10:19 AM Seattle (57-94) at Kansas City (68-84) 2:10 p.m. EDT

KANSAS CITY, Missouri (Ticker) -- Jose Guillen may be a clubhouse cancer, but the man can flat out hit. Guillen aims to continue his torrid stretch and help the Kansas City Royals win seven straight for the first time in five years against the Seattle Mariners on Thursday.

The Royals signed Guillen to a three-year, $36 million in the offseason, and he has been their best player. The 32-year-old leads the team with 20 home runs and 95 RBI, and is hitting .414 (24-for-58) with two homers and 14 RBI during a career-high 14-game hitting streak.

Despite the production, Guillen been a distraction for the most the season as well. The temperamental outfielder complained earlier in the year saying, the reason the Royals don't win is because they have a "bunch of babies," on the team.

He was a late scratch on Tuesday, which led to speculation that he was benched due to attitude issues. But manager Trey Hillman said it was an illness that kept Guillen out. In any event, the slugger returned on Wednesday and belted a two-run single to lead the Royals to a 5-2 victory.

Guillen has been a big reason the Royals are on their longest winning streak since winning nine in a row from March 31-April 12, 2003. Guillen and Kansas City seek their first four-game sweep of the Mariners since 1989 against Ryan Feierabend (1-3, 5.79 ERA), who is making his seventh start.

Feierabend is 0-3 with a 9.88 ERA in three road starts.

The Royals counter with Zack Greinke (11-10, 3.73), who is looking to deal the Mariners an eighth straight loss. Greinke has two wins in his last seven starts.
