Injured Angels try to avoid sweep

OAKLAND, California (Ticker) -- With the rash of injuries they have endured, the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim are probably relieved they have clinched the American League West.

The shorthanded Angels try to avoid a sweep by the Oakland Athletics on Thursday.

The Angels have been without some of their key players since wrapping up a fourth division title in five years on September 10.

Slugger Vladimir Guerrero has missed four games due to an irritated right knee, while left fielder Juan Rivera has missed three contests with tightness in his right hip flexor. Second baseman Howie Kendrick hasn't played since August 28 due to a left hamstring strain and his replacement, Erik Aybar, has played sparingly in the last two games while he recovers from a strained left hamstring.

Chone Figgins can be added to the list of injured Angels as he is headed back to Los Angeles to have his right elbow examined by team orthopedist Dr. Lewis Yocum on Thursday. Figgins was hit by a pitch from New York Yankees starter Carl Pavano on September 8 and is still experiencing soreness.

"I'm wondering why the soreness isn't going away - that's my concern," Figgins told the Los Angeles Times on Wednesday. "It's not going away with ice and the usual (treatment). They just want to check it out."

Joe Saunders (15-7, 3.65 ERA) tries to provide a boost for Anaheim. Rookie Josh Outman (1-0, 3.86) will make his second career start as he counters for the Athletics.
