Mariners hope to stop eight-game slide vs. Athletics

Sep 19, 2008 - 10:20 AM Seattle (57-95) at Oakland (71-81) 10:05 p.m. EDT

OAKLAND, California (Ticker) -- The Seattle Mariners are apparently determined to choose first in June's draft.

The Mariners (57-95) have dropped eight straight games to fall behind the San Diego Padres (58-95) and Washington Nationals (58-95) in the race to avoid baseball's worst record. They will attempt to snap the slide on Friday against the Oakland Athletics.

Seattle has managed 2.1 runs per game during its current slide, providing a glimpse of what has been a season-long problem. The Mariners rank 13th in the American League in runs scored and on-base percentage, ahead of only the A's in both categories.

However, Oakland, is not limping to the finish line. Winners of four of their last five games, the A's have averaged 5.8 runs over the past week.

They scored four runs in the ninth inning against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim on Thursday but could not overcome a 6-0 deficit, ending their four-game winning streak.

Seattle will send ace Felix Hernandez (9-10, 3.42 ERA) to the mound. The 22-year-old righthander has posted just two wins in his last 11 starts despite allowing three runs or less in eight of those outings.

Hernandez earned a win over Oakland on August 24, allowing three runs and four hits in six frames.

The A's will counter with lefthander Dana Eveland (8-8, 4.27). The 24-year-old has pitched well in his last five starts, going 1-0 with a 3.48 ERA.
