Rays, Twins look to improve playoff positions
Sep 19, 2008 - 10:19 AM Minnesota (83-70) at Tampa Bay (90-61) 7:10 p.m. EDTST. PETERSBURG, Florida (Ticker) -- The Minnesota Twins will need to hold on to some of Thursday's magic if they hope to catch the Chicago White Sox in the American league Central.
The Twins (83-70) trailed, 8-6, in the ninth inning against the Tampa Bay Rays, but scored five runs in the frame to pick up the win and move to within 1 1/2 games of the White Sox (84-68) with nine games to play.
The loss kept the Rays' magic number to clinch a playoff spot at three, but trimmed their lead over the Boston Red Sox in the AL East to 1 1/2 games.
Rookie Evan Longoria hit three home runs on Thursday in the losing effort, further strengthening his case for AL Rookie of the Year. Despite missing the past month with a wrist fracture, the 22-year-old has 25 blasts.
Minnesota rookie Nick Blackburn (10-9, 3.89 ERA) will be looking to bounce back from his worst outing of the second half when he gets the start on Friday. The righthander allowed six runs and nine hits in four innings to suffer a loss at Baltimore on Sunday.
Blackburn, 26, had posted a 3.19 ERA and a .255 batting average against in his previous 13 starts.
The Rays will counter with Edwin Jackson (11-11, 4.33), who will also be attempting to rebound from a subpar outing. The 24-year-old righthander lasted two innings against the New York Yankees, allowing six runs and six hits.
Jackson has suffered the loss in each of his last three starts, surrendering 15 runs in 12 1/3 frames.
