Ramirez, Dodgers closing in on NL West crown
Sep 21, 2008 - 7:18 AM San Francisco (69-86) at LA Dodgers (81-74), 4:10 p.m. EDTLOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- The Los Angeles Dodgers are on their way to winning the National League West thanks mainly to Manny Ramirez.
Los Angeles looks to take one step closer to the division crown on Sunday when it duels the San Francisco Giants.
Since Los Angeles acquired Ramirez from the Boston Red Sox at the trade deadline, the slugger is hitting .404 with 16 home runs and 49 RBI in 47 contests. Ramirez blasted two homers and drove in five during Los Angeles' 10-7 victory on Saturday.
The Dodgers lead the Arizona Diamondbacks (77-77) by 3 1/2 games in the NL West with seven games remaining - all against teams below .500.
Winner of his last four starts, Derek Lowe (14-11, 3.40 ERA) will be on the mound for the Dodgers. The righthander has allowed two runs or less in each of his last seven starts.
Lowe defeated Pittsburgh on Tuesday, allowing one run over seven innings.
The Giants will counter with Matt Cain (8-13, 3.91), who has not won since August 15.
Cain has dropped his last four decisions, including one on Tuesday when he allowed two runs over seven innings against Arizona.
