Astros look to keep hopes alive vs. Reds
Sep 24, 2008 - 10:10 AM Cincinnati (74-83) at Houston (82-74) 8:05 p.m. EDTHOUSTON (Ticker) -- The Houston Astros made a great run at a playoff spot earlier this month. It appears that dream has come to an end.
The Astros will be looking to stave off elimination for one more day when they face the Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday.
Houston trails the New York Mets (87-70) by 4 1/2 games with five games remaining.
The Astros won 14 of 15 starting in late August and seemed primed for a surge into the postseason. But Hurricane Ike forced the postponement of two games that turned into a trip to Milwaukee for a pair of "home" games, stifling the team's momentum.
Houston dropped the series opener, 2-1, on Tuesday, failing to get anything going against All-Star righthander Edinson Volquez.
The Astros will take their swings against Cincinnati rookie Ramon Ramirez (1-0, 2.45 ERA), who will be making his fourth career start. The 26-year-old righthander picked up his first win on Friday at Milwaukee, allowing two runs in six innings.
Veteran Randy Wolf (11-12, 4.46) will counter for Houston. The lefthander came over from the San Diego Padres prior to the trade deadline and is 5-2 with a 3.94 ERA in 11 starts for the Astros.
Wolf won at Pittsburgh on Friday, allowing one run and three hits while striking out seven in seven innings.
