Diamondbacks continue final push for playoff bid
Sep 24, 2008 - 10:07 AM Arizona (79-78) at St. Louis (81-76), 8:15 pm EDTST. LOUIS (Ticker) -- The Arizona Diamondbacks have won seven of their last nine, but are still on the ropes.
Looking to bounce back from a loss, the Diamondbacks continue their desperate run at a National League playoff spot against the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday.
Ryan Ludwick belted a three-run home run and helped the Cardinals to their third win in 13 games, a 7-4 victory on Tuesday.
Even with the victory, the Cardinals were eliminated from postseason contention after the wild-card leading New York Mets (87-70) defeated the Chicago Cubs.
The Diamondbacks are in the NL West race ... barely. They are three games behind the first-place Los Angeles Dodgers (82-75) with five to play.
Max Scherzer (0-3, 3.00 ERA) takes the mound for Arizona looking to notch his first career victory. The 24-year-old has a 3.38 ERA in six starts this season, while posting a 2.37 mark over nine relief appearances.
In three September starts, he has recorded 28 strikeouts in 17 innings.
The Cardinals counter with Adam Wainwright (10-3, 3.21), who is 4-0 in six starts since coming off the disabled list from a sprained right middle finger.
The righthander is 2-1 with a 2.45 ERA in three starts against the Diamondbacks in his career. He held them to one run and three hits in 5 1/3 frames en route to an 8-3 triumph on September 2 - his lone outing against them this season.
