Marlins seek to snap skid against Nationals
Sep 24, 2008 - 10:07 AM Florida (81-76) at Washington (59-98), 7:10 pm EDTWASHINGTON (Ticker) -- It took much longer than expected, but the Florida Marlins have been eliminated from playoff contention. Now, they can turn their attention to ending a losing streak and leaving 2008 on a positive wave.
The Marlins look to snap a four-game losing streak against the Washington Nationals on Wednesday.
Florida won't have a postseason spot, but it could play the role of spoiler this weekend when it visits the Mets for a three-game set to conclude the regular season.
Josh Johnson (6-1, 3.65 ERA) takes the mound for Florida against the Nationals with hopes of winning his third straight start. The 24-year-old righthander has held opponents to three runs or less in eight of his last 10 outings.
He is 2-0 with a 3.15 ERA in three starts and one relief appearance against the Nationals.
Washington, which is trying to avoid its first 100-loss season since 1976, counters with Tim Redding (10-10, 4.67).
The 30-year-old righthander has two wins in his last eight starts, and has held opponents to two runs or less twice in the past 10.
