Rookie lefthanders meet when Blue Jays take on Orioles
Sep 26, 2008 - 10:27 AM Toronto (84-75) at Baltimore (67-91) 7:05 p.m. EDTBALTIMORE (Ticker) -- The last time Chris Waters took the mound, he was facing the New York Yankees in the finale at Yankee Stadium.
The stage figures to be a bit smaller when Waters and the Baltimore Orioles take on the Toronto Blue Jays on Friday.
Baltimore, which has lost nine straight and has not captured a win since Waters threw a complete game shutout on September 16 against Toronto, will finish in last place in the American League East for the first time since 1988.
Waters (3-4, 5.06) allowed four hits and two walks in a 2-0 win over the Blue Jays. He followed that performance by being roughed up by the Yankees over 5 2/3 innings, surrendering five runs, six hits and four walks in New York's 7-3 win.
The rookie lefthander has struggled in five home starts, going 1-3 with an ERA of 7.00.
Toronto counters with another rookie, Scott Richmond (0-3, 5.14). The righthander, who is in search of his first major league win, will make a start on the road for the first time.
Richmond, 29, has allowed three runs in each of his four outings this season, but has not been able to make it out of the fifth inning in any of those appearances.
In his last start on September 21, a 3-0 loss to the Boston Red Sox, Richmond gave up three runs, five hits and a walk in five innings.
