Disappointments meet when Diamondbacks take on Rockies

Sep 26, 2008 - 10:25 AM Colorado (74-85) at Arizona (79-80) 9:40 p.m. EDT

PHOENIX (Ticker) -- This is not how the Arizona Diamondbacks and Colorado Rockies hoped to end their 2008 campaigns.

After meeting in the National League Championship Series last season, the teams entered 2008 with expectations of another postseason run. Instead, they open a season-ending series on Friday having both been eliminated.

Colorado swept last year's NLCS before being beaten in four straight games by the Boston Red Sox in the World Series.

While the Rockies have been out of the the NL playoff picture for some time, the Diamondbacks had their postseason aspirations officially expire with a 12-3 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals on Thursday.

Dan Haren (16-8, 3.27) should not shoulder much of the blame for Arizona's disappointing season. The righthander ranks in the top 10 in the NL in wins , ERA, strikeouts (197) and innings pitched (209).

Haren, 28, is 3-0 in three starts with a 2.70 ERA against the Rockies this season. He pitched six solid innings in his last start, which was in Colorado, allowing three runs and seven hits over six innings in a 13-4 win.

The Rockies counter with Jason Hirsh (0-0, 10.38), who will be making his first start of the season. After going 5-7 with a 4.81 in 19 starts with Colorado last season, the righthander has struggled with a strained right rotator cuff for much of the season and has made just three relief appearances.
