Astros resigned to playing out schedule vs. Braves
Sep 27, 2008 - 10:10 AM Atlanta (71-89) at Houston (85-74) 7:05 p.m. EDTHOUSTON (Ticker) -- A day after being officially eliminated from playoff contention, the Houston Astros continue to play out the schedule when they take on the Atlanta Braves on Saturday.
Darin Erstad's walkoff home run in the bottom of the ninth inning gave the Astros a dramatic 5-4 win on Friday, but the Milwaukee Brewers' 5-1 victory over the Chicago Cubs ended Houston's hopes of a September comeback.
Looking to bounce back from his shortest outing of the season, Brandon Backe (9-13, 5.66) will get the start for Houston. The righthander lasted 1 2/3 innings, allowing five runs, six hits - two homers - and two walks to the Florida Marlins.
Backe is 2-1 in five appearances - three starts - against the Braves, but has not faced them yet this season. He has allowed 12 earned runs in 19 1/3 career innings.
Braves starter James Parr (1-0, 4.00) will look to return to the form that saw him pitch 12 shutout innings in his first two starts this season.
Over his last two starts, the 22-year-old righthander has allowed eight runs and 14 hits in just six innings pitched. He lasted just 1 2/3 innings in his last outing against the New York Mets, surrendering four runs, four hits and four walks.
