Glaus, Pujols power Cardinals over Reds

Sep 28, 2008 - 2:31 AM ST. LOUIS (Ticker) -- Troy Glaus and Albert Pujols each homered and reached personal milestones as the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Cincinnati Reds, 8-5, on Saturday.

Glaus' second-inning, two-run shot put the Cardinals on the board and gave him 100 RBI this season, reaching the plateau for the fifth time in his career. Pujols' solo blast in the seventh was his 37th of the year and gave him 100 runs scored for the seventh time in eight career seasons. He just missed the mark in 2007, finishing with 99 runs.

Todd Wellemeyer (13-9) went 6 1/3 innings, giving up three runs and seven hits while striking out three and walking one to snap a personal three-game skid. He also delivered an RBI single in the fourth to help his own cause.

The 6-3 righthander had been respectable enough in his last three outings, giving up six earned runs over 17 innings for a 3.18 ERA. However, the Cardinals' offense hadn't kept up its end of the bargain, contributing just four runs in support of Wellemeyer in those three starts.

On Saturday, however, St. Louis got on the board early and often. Felipe Lopez belted a solo homer in the third - his seventh of the year and fourth this month - and Ryan Ludwick continued to add on to his career season with an RBI single, giving him 110 RBI.

Reds starter Aaron Harang (6-17) gave up six runs - four earned - and nine hits over five innings.
