Mariners go for sweep of Athletics
Sep 28, 2008 - 7:35 AM Oakland (75-85) at Seattle (60-101) 4:10 p.m. EDTSEATTLE (Ticker) -- The Seattle Mariners will attempt to sweep a series at home for the first time all season when they take on the Oakland Athletics on Sunday.
Seattle, which entered the 2008 campaign with postseason aspirations, has already clinched the worst record in the American League and will look to avoid finishing with the worst record in baseball in the season finale. A loss and a Washington Nationals win over the Philadelphia Phillies would put the Mariners at the bottom of the major league standings.
R.A. Dickey (4-8, 5.23) gets the ball for the Mariners for his first start in over a month. The knuckleballer last started a game on August 20 and completed only two innings. Dickey allowed eight runs, six hits - two homers - and two walks.
Since being moved to the bullpen, the righthander has allowed one run in 7 2/3 innings.
In a start against the Athletics on July 10, Dickey threw seven scoreless innings and allowed four hits and four walks.
Josh Outman (1-1, 4.58) makes his fourth start of the season for Oakland. The 24-year-old allowed three runs and 10 hits over six innings, but did not receive a decision in a September 23 start against the Texas Rangers.
After taking the first game of a six-game road trip to end the season, the Athletics have dropped four straight and have allowed a combined 37 runs during the skid.
