Orioles close out disappointing season vs. Blue Jays
Sep 28, 2008 - 7:36 AM Toronto (85-76) at Baltimore (68-92) 1:35 pm. EDTBALTIMORE (Ticker) -- The Baltimore Orioles look to end a bitterly disappointing season on a high note on Sunday when they host the Toronto Blue Jays.
Baltimore snapped a 10-game losing streak on Saturday with 2-1 victory in a contest that was called in the seventh inning due to rain. These days, the Orioles will take wins anyway they can get them.
"Mother Nature helped us, and Lord knows we needed all the help we can get," Orioles manager Dave Trembley said. "We'll take it."
Baltimore concludes its 11th straight losing season with its first last-place finish since 1988. The Orioles have limped to the finish line, having lost 27 of 33.
Jeremy Guthrie (10-11, 3.57 ERA) gets the final start for Baltimore. Easily the Orioles' best start, Guthrie has not pitched since August 29 due to a sore right shoulder. Guthrie was activated from the disabled list on Saturday.
Toronto sends Jesse Litsch (12-9, 3.67) to the hill. Litsch is 4-2 with a 2.00 ERA in eight starts since being recalled from Class AAA Syracuse on August 12.
