Royals spoiling Twins playoff hopes
Sep 28, 2008 - 7:37 AM Kansas City (75-86) at Minnesota (87-74), 2:10 p.m. EDTMINNEAPOLIS (Ticker) -- Coming off a critical sweep of the Chicago White Sox, the Minnesota Twins are having an improbably difficult time with the Kansas City Royals.
The first-place Twins hope to avoid a sweep and stay atop the American League Central on Sunday when they host the Royals.
Minnesota has dropped the first two games, but Chicago (86-74) has been defeated twice by the Cleveland Indians to keep the Twins ahead in the division by one-half game. The White Sox have a makeup game with the Detroit Tigers on Monday, if necessary.
The Twins will turn to Scott Baker (10-4, 3.59 ERA) in hopes of turning things around.
Baker is 3-0 in his last five starts and beat the White Sox on Tuesday, giving up one run over seven innings.
Kansas City, which has won 13 of 15, will counter with Brandon Duckworth (3-2, 5.06).
The righthander lost to Chicago in his last outing on September 21, allowing three runs in six innings.
