Beckett sharp in spring debut

Feb 25, 2009 - 8:05 PM FORT MYERS, Florida (Ticker) -- Josh Beckett tossed two scoreless innings as the Boston Red Sox defeated Boston College, 7-1, in an exhibition game on Wednesday.

Beckett, who is looking to bounce back from an injury-plagued 2008 season, threw 22 pitches, including 15 for strikes, in his first start of the spring. He did not allow a baserunner and struck out two.

Last year, the righthander had a pair of stints on the disabled list with back and oblique issues, contributing to a subpar 12-10 record with a 4.03 ERA.

Clay Buchholz relieved Beckett and threw only six pitches (five strikes) with one strikeout in his lone inning.

Chris Carter had a three-run double to pace Boston's offense.
