Rockies hold on for win over Braves

Sep 24, 2006 - 4:18 AM DENVER (Ticker) -- The Colorado Rockies' fast start was just enough to get them by the Atlanta Braves.

Matt Holliday hit his 31st home run, sparking a six-run third inning, and the Rockies held on for a 10-9 triumph over the Braves, who wasted a multi-homer outing by Andruw Jones.

With the game tied at 3-3 in the third, Holliday led off with a solo shot to right field against Atlanta starter Kyle Davies (3-6) for a one-run edge. Then the rest of the Rockies started their barrage against the righthander.

Jeff Baker and rookie Troy Tulowitzki had back-to-back run-scoring hits before Kaz Matsui made it 8-3 with a two-run triple to right-center, chasing Davies. Rookie Jeff Salazar capped the uprising with an RBI double to right for a six-run cushion.

Jones was instrumental in the Braves' near comeback, connecting for his second solo shot in the seventh, making it, 10-6. After Edgar Renteria delivered a two-run single in the eighth, Willy Aybar had to settle for an RBI double in the ninth when his deep shot to right bounced off the wall, cutting the deficit to just one.

But Brian Fuentes recorded back-to-back strikeouts against Adam LaRoche and Todd Pratt to earn his 28th save, securing the win for starter Jeff Francis (13-11).

The Canadian lefthander allowed five runs and nine hits in five innings.

Davies was beat up for a season-high nine runs and 12 hits in just 2 1/3 frames.
