Longoria leads Rays to rout of Red Sox

Feb 27, 2009 - 10:39 PM PORT CHARLOTTE, Florida (Ticker) -- Evan Longoria hit a two-run homer Friday as the Tampa Bay Rays rolled to a 12-4 Grapefruit League victory over the Boston Red Sox in a game between last year's American League Championship Series participants.

Longoria's two-run shot in the second inning was the first home run of the spring for the Rays.

Fernando Perez had two hits and drove in a pair of runs for the Rays. Jason Bartlett added two hits and three RBI, while Tim Beckham, the No. 1 overall pick of the 2008 draft, got an infield hit in his first at-bat.

Rays starter Jeff Niemann, who is competing for the No. 5 spot in the rotation, pitched two scoreless innings, allowing just one hit while striking out two.

Red Sox righthander Michael Bowden, who played at three levels of Boston's organization in 2008, gave up four runs, five hits and two walks in 1 2/3 innings.
