Spilborghs hits 2 homers in Rockies' 5-1 win.
May 2, 2009 - 11:55 PM SAN FRANCISCO(AP) -- Ryan Spilborghs just loves playing behind Jason Marquis.Spilborghs homered twice and drove in three runs, Marquis pitched a five-hitter and the Rockies beat the San Francisco Giants 5-1 on Saturday.
"He's the ultimate competitor," Spilborghs said. "We want him to have the ball. He's like the Little League kid who wants to catch everything, and make every play. You can even see it when he's hitting."
Marquis (4-1) struck out five and walked one in his fifth career complete game and first since a 1-0 victory for the Chicago Cubs on May 9, 2007, against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
"I am the type of guy who wants to do everything," Marquis said. "I'm tough-minded and I believe in myself. I feel like I don't have to look over my shoulder here if something goes wrong. I can go out every fifth day and battle every time I step on the mound."
Brad Hawpe also connected for Colorado in his first start since getting hit in the neck on Monday. Garrett Atkins hit an RBI single in the third for the Rockies, who have won four of six.
Pablo Sandoval hit a leadoff homer in the ninth for the Giants.
"We just got shut down," manager Bruce Bochy said. "(Marquis) threw strikes and we had a lot of guys chasing the ball down. We pounded the ball into the ground."
Matt Cain (2-1) allowed five runs and seven hits in six innings for the Giants. He walked four and struck out three.
"I just wasn't locating my fastball," Cain said. "I was not able to get ahead with it so I was almost pitching backward. I paid for it."
Spilborghs hit Cain's second pitch into the left-field bleachers for his first career leadoff homer. He added a two-run shot in the fifth.
"I'm facing a guy who throws hard and the only thing I think about is putting my foot on the ground and taking a short swing," Spilborghs said. "I wasn't trying to do anything other than slap the ball and make contact. Sometimes it works better when you don't think so much."
Marquis gave up a leadoff single to Randy Winn before retiring 14 of the next 15 hitters he faced. After giving up consecutive singles to Emmanuel Burriss and Cain in the fifth, he retired 13 of the final 15 batters he faced.
"I like the mound here," Marquis said. "I feel right on top of the hitters and I like the cold. I got early outs and kept the ball down."
Marquis is 4-1 with a 1.98 ERA in eight career games against San Francisco, allowing more than two runs just once in seven starts.
Notes: Cain lost for just the second time in his last eight home starts against the Rockies. ... Colorado 1B Todd Helton went 2 for 5 for his fifth straight multihit game. ... Marquis improved to 4-0 this season and 18-5 overall in day games since 2007. ... Winn left the game early with a cramp in his side. ... The Giants are 0 for 11 with runners in scoring position in two games against the Rockies.
