Garcia, Uribe keeps White Sox in race
Sep 24, 2006 - 9:35 PM CHICAGO (Ticker) -- Freddy Garcia is helping the Chicago White Sox maintain a pulse.Garcia won his third straight start and Juan Uribe belted a grand slam as the White Sox kept their ultra-feint playoff hopes alive with a 12-7 win over the Seattle Mariners. A loss would have eliminated Chicago from postseason contention.
The White Sox (87-69) remain 5 1/2 games behind the Minnesota Twins for the American League wild card lead with just six games to play, all on the road. Chicago heads to Cleveland for a three-game set on Monday before finishing up with three games at Minnesota next weekend.
"It's a longshot, but we got to just keep doing our jobs," said Chicago's Paul Konerko, who had two of his team's five home runs, a pair of two-run blasts.
In winning for the fifth time in six decisions, Garcia extended his scoreless streak to 20 innings before yielding a run-scoring single to Adrian Beltre in the fifth.
Kenji Johjima added a three-run blast off Garcia (16-9) in the seventh to pull Seattle within 5-4, but Chicago answered with six runs in the bottom of the frame, highlighted by Uribe's slam.
"Freddy had one bad pitch and that catcher (Johjima) hit the home run," White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen said. "He was dominating and he had another good outing and it's too bad we can't keep playing him."
The Venezuelan righthander allowed four runs and eight hits in 6 2/3 innings as the White Sox salvaged a split of the four-game set by winning the final two games.
Konerko's two homers gave him 113 RBI on the season. Brian Anderson and Joe Crede added solo shots for the White Sox.
Lefthander Ryan Feierabend (0-1), making his first career start, allowed five runs and eight hits for the Mariners, who got homers from Ben Broussard and Jose Lopez.
"I think Ryan learned a couple things today. One is the importance of locating your fastball," Mariners manager Mike Hargrove said.
No one has shouted yet.
