Marlins-Phillies Preview

May 25, 2009 - 12:13 AM By MATT BEARDMORE STATS Writer

Florida (19-25) at Philadelphia (23-18), 7:05 p.m. EDT

With three straight losses, Philadelphia Phillies left-hander Jamie Moyer has struggled in his bid for career win No. 250. The 46-year-old southpaw, though, again goes for the milestone victory Monday night at Citizens Bank Park against the Florida Marlins, a team he has dominated in his career.

Since picking up his 249th victory April 26 in a 13-2 win over the Marlins, Moyer (3-4, 7.62 ERA) is 0-3 with a 10.80 ERA in four starts. His ERA and opponents' batting average of .351 are among the worst in baseball.

The veteran lefty, though, pitched relatively well in his last start - walking just one and yielding three runs in six innings - but Philadelphia (24-18) lost 5-1 to Cincinnati on Wednesday.

"It's not about me. It's about us," Moyer told the Phillies' official Web site. "We didn't win, that's first and foremost. When we win, it's a good day, regardless of how well or how poor you pitched."

Moyer, who is 249-189 in 23 seasons, would become the 44th pitcher in major league history to reach 250 victories if he continues his superb pitching against the Marlins.

He is 12-1 with a 2.84 ERA in 13 career starts versus Florida, his best record against any team with more than three decisions.

In Monday's opener of the three-game set, Florida (20-25) gives the ball to right-hander Chris Volstad, who was three months old when Moyer made his major league debut in 1986.

Volstad (3-3, 3.64 ERA) looks for another solid outing following Wednesday's 8-6 win in 13 innings over Arizona as he struck out a career-best nine in six innings.

He was 0-3 with a 4.50 ERA in his previous three starts.

"I had all my stuff working," said Volstad, who retired 11 in a row at one point versus the Diamondbacks. "It was just a matter of getting ahead in the count and finishing it off. I just thought I pitched pretty well."

Volstad is 1-1 with a 2.14 ERA in four career starts against Philadelphia. He pitched seven innings of four-hit ball against the Phillies on April 25, but Florida's bullpen couldn't hold the lead as the Marlins fell 6-4 in 10 innings.

The NL East-leading Phillies open a six-game homestand following an 8-2 trip that ended Sunday with a 4-3, 11-inning win over the New York Yankees. Carlos Ruiz capped off his second straight three-hit game with an RBI double in the 11th as Philadelphia overcame a second straight blown save by Brad Lidge to improve its road record to a major league-best 16-6.

"We ended the trip well and needed that," said Phillies manager Charlie Manuel, whose team has dropped four of five at home.

Shane Victorino, who has a seven-game hitting streak, had eight RBIs in a three-game sweep of the Marlins in Florida from April 24-26.

The Marlins, meanwhile, snapped a four-game slide Sunday when Ross Gload had a game-winning single in the 11th for a 5-4 win over Tampa Bay. Gload, Jeremy Hermida, John Baker and Chris Coghlan all had three hits as the Marlins posted a season-high 17 hits to closed out their 3-7 homestand.

The Phillies have won five straight over the Marlins, but Florida has taken three of four in Philadelphia.
