Cardinals-Brewers Preview
May 25, 2009 - 11:16 PM By SANTOSH VENKATARAMAN STATS Senior WriterSt. Louis (26-18) at Milwaukee (26-18), 8:05 p.m. EDT
Since Jeff Suppan left the St. Louis Cardinals to join the Milwaukee Brewers, he's continued to dominate his former team.
Suppan looks to win his eighth straight decision against the Cardinals - and sixth in a row with the Brewers - when the NL Central rivals continue their three-game series Tuesday night at Miller Park.
The veteran right-hander pitched for St. Louis from 2004-06, helping the Cardinals win three division titles and one World Series. Since signing with Milwaukee after the 2006 season, he hasn't helped St. Louis (26-19) one bit.
Suppan (3-3, 4.71 ERA) is 5-0 with a 1.62 ERA in six starts versus the Cardinals while with the Brewers. He allowed six singles over seven innings to beat St. Louis 1-0 on May 16.
"It's a matter of whatever juice you have going against a team, you use it to aid your performance," Suppan said after that game. "We're human beings, so of course we have emotions. But your preparation has to be the same, it's doing it on the field."
He's 7-0 with a 1.70 ERA in his last eight outings against the Cardinals, a stretch that began with two starts while with Pittsburgh in 2003. His success has been due in part to his ability to limit the damage done by Cardinals slugger Albert Pujols.
While Pujols is 13 for 33 (.394) against Suppan, he has no homers and two RBIs versus the right-hander.
Suppan is the only active pitcher that Pujols hasn't homered against with at least 25 at-bats.
Milwaukee (27-18) took a one-game lead over St. Louis for first place in the division with a 1-0 win in 10 innings Monday. Bill Hall, mired in a 1-for-28 slump, singled in Casey McGehee for the victory.
"I got the big hit, everybody just came into the clubhouse and we celebrated in here. Just having fun with ourselves," Hall said. "We care about each other in here."
The Brewers are 4-0 against the Cardinals this season and have won 11 of the last 12 meetings.
As with Suppan, the key to Milwaukee's recent domination of St. Louis has been containing Pujols. The Cardinals star is 8 for 35 (.229) with nine walks and one RBI in his last 11 games versus the Brewers.
This will be Suppan's second straight start against the Cardinals in which he matches up with Adam Wainwright (4-2, 3.41). The St. Louis right-hander was the loser May 16 despite giving up one run on a homer by Corey Hart and one other hit over eight innings.
Wainwright was just as good Thursday against the Chicago Cubs, allowing one run and five hits while striking out seven over 8 2-3 innings of a 3-1 victory.
"Honestly, I felt stronger as I went," Wainwright said. "I feel like I could still be out there pitching, and I think they probably read that."
Wainwright is 2-3 with a 3.09 ERA in seven starts versus the Brewers. He's limited Hart to a .190 average and Prince Fielder to a .211 average.
