DOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!: “I hope people saw how much I enjoyed playing this game,” Sean Doolittle said, as the now-36-year-old reliever announced his retirement on Friday, after eleven seasons in the majors, over which the lefty made 463 appearances and saved 112 games, with a 3.20 ERA and 2.94 FIP for his career, “and [I hope people saw] how much it meant to me to be able to put on a big league uniform.” Unfortunately for Doolittle, the last few seasons were injury-plagued, and he spent a lot of time and put in a lot of hard work trying to get back to the majors one more time, but that wasn’t to be. - Washington Nationals news & notes: Jackson Rutledge bounces back from a rough debut; Nats 4-3 over White Sox... “It was pretty much spot-on to what I was expecting, to be honest,” 2019 1st Round pick Jackson Rutledge said of his debut in the majors last week in PNC Park. “Beautiful stadium, beautiful place to play,” the 24-year-old told reporters. Things didn’t go as he hoped, however, with the 6’7’’ starter giving up 10 hits, and seven runs, six of the hits, and four of the runs, in a 33-pitch first which threatened to end his outing real early. “Obviously I dreamed of a better first inning,” Rutledge acknowledged after hanging in there for 3 2⁄3 innings and 90 pitches, “but … it will be better next time.” Once he got through the first, Rutledge said, he was able to settle in a little. “I think I mixed pitches better,” he said. Luis García was on a nice run at the plate before Washington recalled the 23-year-old from Triple-A Rochester earlier this month, going 14 for 40 (.325 AVG), with three doubles, three walks, and six runs scored in the last 11 games, and 6 for 13 (.462 AVG) in the final three for the Nationals’ top minor league affiliate, where he played for a month-plus after struggling offensively in the big leagues in his first 100 games and 407 plate appearances between late March and early August this season (.259/.293/.362, 13 doubles, four triples, six home runs, 21 BBs, 51 Ks). Before the series finale with the LA Dodgers in Nationals Park on Sunday, a reporter noted that Washington’s 24-year-old, 2019 1st Round pick Jackson Rutledge’s scheduled start on Friday didn’t happen because he’d been scratched without explanation.
