Short-handed Spurs breeze past Nets

Feb 11, 2013 - 5:27 AM Brooklyn, NY (Sports Network) - While the Spurs were once again without Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili, they weren't needed as San Antonio generated a similar result as its previous encounter with Brooklyn.

Tony Parker registered 29 points and 11 assists as the Spurs once again breezed past the Nets, 111-86, on Sunday at Barclays Center.

The Spurs shot an impressive 12-for-19 from beyond the arc, with Danny Green knocking down four from long distance and Matt Bonner connecting on all three of his attempts.

Green scored 14 points and Bonner followed with 11 as San Antonio returned to its winning ways after having its 11-game win streak snapped on Friday in Detroit.

"We needed a win," Parker remarked. "We were very disappointed after a loss against Detroit."

Brooklyn, which scored just five points in the third quarter of its 104-73 setback in San Antonio on Dec. 31, managed just 29 points over the final two frames on Sunday for its sixth loss in nine games.

"Offensively, the push wasn't there in the second half," Nets interim coach P.J. Carlesimo said. "A lot of the things that we did well, we stopped doing. We got very careless with the ball, turning it over, getting stripped, not finishing."

Joe Johnson scored 19 points, Brook Lopez had 18 with nine rebounds and Deron Williams totaled 15 points in the setback.

The Nets were thriving from 3-point range early, hitting 4-of-5 from long distance in the first to help open up a 35-25 lead, but it slowly began to go downhill from there.

Brooklyn managed to make just two of its final 14 attempts from beyond the arc the rest of the way.

After trailing by as many as 11, the Spurs started to put things together late in the second before tying the game at 61-61 with 8:22 left in the third, where San Antonio outscored Brooklyn 30-14.

Parker had a big hand in San Antonio's rally, as he shredded through the Nets' defense for 10 points in addition to handing out four assists in the period.

After scoring on a reverse layup, Parker set Bonner up for a trey before handing off to Boris Diaw under the basket for a score to help the Spurs close out the quarter on 7-0 run and take an 81-71 advantage into the fourth.

San Antonio quickly turned up the heat by putting together an impressive 30-9 run to put the contest away. The surge featured triples from Diaw and Parker before Bonner knocked down his second during the stretch to create a 101-80 spread with 4:23 remaining.

The Nets shot 56.4 percent in the first half, but were a brutal 12-for-33 over the final two sessions and their 11 giveaways during the stretch turned into 19 points for the Spurs.

San Antonio became the first team this season to reach 40 wins ... The Spurs have won 19 of the last 20 contests with the Nets ... Brooklyn committed 18 turnovers for the night, while San Antonio had just seven ... Tiago Splitter finished with 13 points and nine boards for the Spurs.
