Griffin, Clippers pummel Spurs
Nov 8, 2012 - 6:23 AM Los Angeles, CA (Sports Network) - Blake Griffin recorded a double-double with 22 points and 10 rebounds on Wednesday, as the Los Angeles Clippers steamrolled the San Antonio Spurs, 106-84, at Staples Center.DeAndre Jordan and Chris Paul each registered a double-double as well, as Jordan tallied 20 points and 11 boards and Paul finished with 10 points and 12 assists for the Clippers, who were swept by the Spurs in the second round of the playoffs last season.
"When we come out to play, the sky is the limit for our team," Jordan remarked. "We tried to be aggressive with our intensity high."
Danny Green scored a team-high 12 points, while Tim Duncan added 10 points and six rebounds as the Spurs took their first loss of the season after opening the year with four consecutive victories.
The Spurs scored the first five points of the game, but were outscored 22-11 the rest of the frame, as the Clippers carried a 22-16 edge into the second.
Los Angeles pressed its lead to double-digits in the second after Jordan's dunk gave the Clippers a 41-31 lead with 2:52 left until halftime, but the Spurs countered with the next seven points and trailed just 47-41 heading into the locker room.
"They played well. They had more emotion," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said of the Clippers. "We played with them for a half and then we just didn't play with the same intensity and it showed."
The Clipper broke the game open in the third, as a Willie Green jumper sparked an 11-3 surge, which Matt Barnes capped with a 3-pointer to give the home team a 70-54 lead with 4:35 left in the third.
The lead ballooned to 20 by the end of the frame, but the Spurs opened the fourth on an 11-2 flurry to pull within 84-73 with just over eight minutes left in the game.
The visitors would get no closer however, as Los Angeles responded with a 15-1 surge to take a 25-point lead and put the game away for good.
Game Notes
Los Angeles shot 55.4 percent from the field compared to just 41.1 percent from the Spurs ... The game got a bit chippy late in the fourth, as Griffin and Jordan, along with San Antonio guard Stephen Jackson all received technical fouls ... All 13 Spurs that dressed for the game recorded a point.
