Thompson's big third quarter carries Warriors over Pistons
Dec 6, 2012 - 6:13 AM Auburn Hills, MI (Sports Network) - Klay Thompson poured in a game-high 27 points, including 19 in the third quarter, and Stephen Curry had 22 points and 10 assists to lead the Golden State Warriors to a 104-97 win over the Detroit Pistons.David Lee had 20 points and 11 rebounds and Harrison Barnes had 10 points for the Warriors, winners of four of their last five.
"We moved the basketball, we made plays and we were aggressive," Warriors coach Mark Jackson said. "We were unselfish, and we got high-percentage shots."
Tayshaun Prince had 24 points and Andre Drummond scored 15 to go along with 12 boards for the Pistons, losers in three of their last four.
Rodney Stuckey had 17 points and nine assists in the setback.
"We know that Golden State has a lot of great shooters on their team. We know that if you leave them open, even for a split-second, they'll knock down the shot," Drummond said.
Golden State led by as many as 20 points in the fourth quarter, but an 18-4 Detroit run capped off by back-to-back 3-pointers from Charlie Villanueva and Prince pulled the Pistons within 98-95 with 1:08 left.
Following a pair of made free throws from Golden State's Jarrett Jack, the Pistons turned it over and were forced to foul Curry, who sank a pair from the line to put the Warriors up by seven. Brandon Knight's deep 3-ball rimmed out then rimmed out for Detroit, but Drummond grabbed the rebound and was fouled after making the putback that cut the lead to 102-97.
Drummond missed the free throw, but Villanueva grabbed the board and kicked it out to Knight, who missed a pair of 3-point attempts. Thompson finally grabbed the rebound for Golden State, and converted a pair from the charity stripe for the seven-point spread.
Stuckey then missed a try from 3-point range and the Warriors dribbled the remaining seconds off the clock.
Golden State led 21-20 after the first 12 minutes and took a 40-38 lead into the break. The Warriors went just 1-for-9 from 3-point range in the first half, but caused 11 Pistons' turnovers leading to eight points.
Golden State opened up a 79-61 lead after outscoring Detroit 39-23 in the third quarter. Thompson poured in 19 points in the period and Curry chipped in with 10. As a team Golden State shot 61.9 percent from the floor and went 7- for-10 from long range during the frame.
Game Notes
The Warriors have scored 100 points in all but three of their 11 wins this season ... Thompson made a career-high five 3-pointers ... The Pistons had a five-game home winning streak snapped ... Detroit has dropped its last three games with the Warriors.
