Ellington leads Grizzlies past Heat
Nov 12, 2012 - 7:26 AM Memphis, TN (Sports Network) - Wayne Ellington connected on seven 3-pointers en route to a game-high 25 points as the Memphis Grizzlies rolled past the Miami Heat, 104-86, at FedEx Forum.Zach Randolph added 18 points and 12 rebounds, while Mike Conley also dropped in 18 points with nine assists for the Grizzlies, who have won five straight are now off to the best start to a season in franchise history at 5-1.
"All the perimeter people made shots," said Memphis coach Lionel Hollins.
Chris Bosh scored 22 points to pace Miami, which had its four-game win streak snapped.
LeBron James contributed a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds, and was the only other member of the Heat to score in double digits.
"Wayne got hot and they were just too much for us from outside tonight," said Miami forward Shane Battier.
After an 8-0 spurt by Miami knotted the game at 12-12 near the midpoint of the first quarter, the Grizzlies reeled off an 8-2 push to take a 20-14 advantage.
The Heat, though, answered with a 7-2 run to get within 22-21 at the end of the first quarter.
Memphis opened the second quarter with a 10-4 swing to regain a 32-25 cushion on a Jerryd Bayless 3-pointer, but the Heat fought back again by scoring nine of the next 14 points to close the gap back to 37-34.
Miami would get no closer than that, and Conley later netted seven straight points as part of a 10-0 run, giving Memphis a 56-41 lead at the break.
The Heat raced out of the gate in the second half, opening the third quarter with a 17-6 push to close the gap to 63-58.
But Conley put a halt to the run with a driving layup that was followed by a Ellington trey to spark a streak off 11 straight points by the Grizzlies, who carried a 76-66 advantage into the fourth quarter.
The Heat got as close as 82-75 less than four minutes into the fourth until Ellington hit a pair of 3-pointers, while Pondexter and Conley each added a triple as part of a 22-2 run that helped give Memphis a comfortable 104-77 lead with 3:30 left in the game.
Each team emptied their bench from there to run out the remainder of the clock.
